Class of 2010: 'Crafted for success, destined for excellence'
"Be confident because you are crafted for success and destined for excellence," the keynote speaker told the 2010 Texas A&M Health Science Center Baylor College of Dentistry graduates during commencement exercises on May 27 at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas.
This year's commencement speaker was Dr. Kelton Stewart, a 2006 and 2008 HSC-BCD alumnus. Stewart is an assistant professor of orthodontics at Indiana University School of Dentistry.
"You are the very best dental education has to offer," Stewart told the graduates, and he encouraged them to make it a top priority to sincerely thank those individuals who supported and guided them.
In all, 160 graduates were recognized. The Class of 2010 included 91 doctor of dental surgery graduates, 30 dental hygiene graduates, 23 graduates receiving specialty certificates, 15 receiving master's degrees in various specialties and one receiving a doctor of philosophy.
A number of individuals were honored during the evening. Dr. David Grogan and JoAnn Scofield, the Dental and Dental Hygiene Teachers of the Year, respectively, received recognition during the event. They also had the privilege of leading the academic procession into the hall. The First Scholastic Honors Gold Medal Award winners were announced. Natalie Anne Koeijmans was the dental hygiene recipient and Robert Darrell Cline Jr. was the dental class recipient.
It was an emotional and exciting night for the graduates, their family members, and the faculty and staff in attendance. In his remarks to the audience, Dr. James S. Cole, dean, summed up the essence of the evening: "Tonight is both a culmination and a commencement for our graduates - the culmination of an extremely rigorous course of study that has prepared them well for the commencement of their professional careers. We have the privilege to honor these wonderful men and women whose commitment and hard work have earned them the degree they will receive tonight."
