2010 Dental Olympics

We are the champions

The 2010 Dental Olympics on April 24 came perilously close to being ruined by rain, but in the end sunshine prevailed, and the only victim of the weather was a canceled softball game.

Matt Brown, the dental student assisting with event planning, tried every facility he could think of, but to no avail. All the local softball fields were soaked; softball was a bust! The annual competition between the three Texas dental schools would have to proceed without it.

By 7:30 a.m. it was time to start the 5K run. With that, the 2010 Dental Olympics was off and running, and the dental and dental hygiene students from Houston, San Antonio and Dallas had no further worries about the weather.

The HSC-BCD runners won both the men's and women's 5K races, which ended with the sun shining brightly on all the students cleverly disguised for the day as dental Olympians.

At the conclusion of the events, the Dental Olympics trophy was, once again, safe and secure in HSC-Baylor College of Dentistry's hands.  Happily, the team T-shirts printed the prior week and boasting 8 out of 10 years of victory in a row (including 2010) were accurate.  HSC-BCD was the overall 2010 Dental Olympics Champion.

HSC-BCD won the 5K races, the men's and women's basketball, men's and women's dodgeball, women's flag football, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's volleyball and women's and co-ed tennis.

"We could not have survived the day had it not been for the Navy and Army providing lunches for everyone, the Dallas County Dental Society keeping us supplied in water and Gatorade and Coach Mike Wheeler opening up facilities at Dallas Christian School for us," say Moira Allen, HSC-BCD director of student affairs.  "We say many thanks to all these folks."
