Lori Dees - 20 Years
Communications & Institutional Advancement
Diligent and determined are attributes describing Lori Dees, who is celebrating 20 years of work at Texas A&M Health Science Center Baylor College of Dentistry.
Dees, who has worked for 12 years in the Office of Communications & Institutional Advancement, jokes that her coworkers just know she will ask, "How much is that going to cost us?" The question crops up frequently during her primary duties of gift-database administration, donor stewardship and office/budget management. She is known for her dedication not only to her own work but to her department's fiscal health and the greater good of the college.
"I enjoy the academic and public service atmosphere at the dental school, serving others and working behind the scenes for the greater mission," says Dees, who was originally hired as a receptionist in the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.
Her commitment to putting others above self was recognized publicly during the college's centennial celebration gala in 2005. Because of her position at the dental school she was involved with much of the monetary gift processing and last-minute gala planning for the 1,000-plus attended event.
"The centennial gala is one of my favorite memories from the past 20 years," Dees says. "It was a wonderful evening with friends and coworkers and it was so nice to see everyone dressed up and happy. I was especially touched that my contribution towards the event was recognized in such a public manner. It was very unexpected."
Dees comments that over the years her coworkers are what she has enjoyed most about her job.
"We are all moms and have very full lives outside the office. We understand that this [work] is something we do to support something else that is much more important - our families," says Dees. "We try to make the time we spend here as enjoyable as possible and treat each other with love and respect."
2010 is another milestone for Dees and her husband, Brooks. They will celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary at the end of the year. With their four beautiful daughters out of the house or in college, the couple is enjoying spending weekends together. When the weather is nice, they can be found on the links with Dees' father or having a meal at home with extended family.
Dees also spends time volunteering for United Way and her church, and she enjoys reading a good book and seeing movies with friends.
