Dr. Janice P. DeWald - 25 Years
Caruth School of Dental Hygiene

Dr. Janice P. DeWald is celebrating her 25th year at Texas A&M Health Science Center Baylor College of Dentistry.

As professor, director and chair of the Caruth School of Dental Hygiene, DeWald stays busy on multiple fronts. She directs the day-to-day activities of the dental hygiene program, works on admissions and manages the curriculum. DeWald is dedicated to providing an excellent educational experience for the dental hygiene students.

Dr. Janice P. DeWald"I feel our dental hygiene program fosters the development of highly skilled, caring and self-motivated learners who will promote the highest standards for the profession," she says.

With all of the administrative responsibilities, DeWald still reserves time for her passion - teaching. She was honored with the Teacher of the Year award in 1994 and 2006. These days she can be found in the classroom teaching Dental Anatomy, Introduction to Dentistry, Research Methods, Applied Research, National Board Review and Introduction to Faculty Responsibilities and Issues in Higher Education.

Prior to assuming the department chair position in 1993-first as interim director and then as permanent director 20 months later-DeWald was on faculty for nine years in operative dentistry (now part of the restorative sciences department).

DeWald says that the most enjoyable part of her job at HSC-BCD is the quality interactions in the academic environment. She says she also enjoys working with the students and seeing the faculty in the department develop and attain their goals.

Waxing nostalgic for a moment, DeWald remembers that 2005 was a particularly exciting year: The college celebrated its 100th anniversary and the Caruth School of Dental Hygiene celebrated its 50th anniversary. "The year of celebration afforded me the opportunity to meet the first Caruth Program director, so many enthusiastic alumni and to learn so much about the college and the program," she says.

When she is not molding the lives of tomorrow's dental hygienists, DeWald enjoys traveling to remote islands and snorkeling.

She and her husband, Rex, have two wonderful children - Bradley (23) and Andrea (19).
