| Bravart | I agree with postive thoughts and prayer is most postive. |

| Bicky | I did no get olp unitl I was 65 years old |
| ukberyl | I am 62 Bicky |
| Bravart | I am 73 and got it at 72 |
| art | Hi Dr. Bornstein, We will begin at 2:00. You are logged on with no problem. Just maintain your connection. |
| ............................ maggie joined............. | |
| Bicky | I am retired and I do not feel stress out |
| ukberyl | they say it hits women after 40...so we got away with a few years I guess. |
| Bicky | thank goodness for that but i wish we could get rid of it |
| Bravart | I had never heard of this in my family and not till last year. |
| ukberyl | me too ....let's hope there's some hope for us here today |
| ukberyl | never heard of it before either....when first had rash they said I had scabies!!! |
| ukberyl | after all this now...I wish it had been scabies |
| Bravart | It has to be triggered by something we have in body, or what you do or act. |
| ukberyl | Is anyone else here diagnosed with Diabetes 2 |
| Bravart | I think mine was triggered by a neck and spinale injuries over 25 years. |
| ............................ carole joined............. | |
| ukberyl | that is stressful yes...injuries |
| Bravart | Anyone tried yoga? |
| ukberyl | I am trying to find out what foods might make it worse. |
| maggie | I had a positive biospy 15 years ago. I think mine is triggered by stress, diet and dental work |
| Bravart | That's a great idea! |
| ukberyl | maggie.....yes to all 3 |
| Bravart | I had a LOT of dental work and about 20 caps. Am thinking this could have strted it. |
| Bicky | since I have a full set of dentures, I don't think thats it for me |
| maggie | Tomatoes, oranges, pineapples make mine worse. |
| ukberyl | I had such a sore mouth last week my doctor here in England gave me a new med... |
| ............................ aupton left............. | |
| Bravart | What RX are the Drs you know using? |
| ukberyl | I will go get name...it helped... the inside of mouth ...not the lip..it was for mouth ulcers I think |
| ukberyl | Has anyone else who had biopsy.......has the biopsy site healed totally? |
| ukberyl | mine will not heal....and the lesions on my lip seem to join up and it's getting bigger |
| carole | Am I in the appropriate place for the 2 o'clock panel with the doctors? |
| ukberyl | Yes Carole... |
| Bicky | I had mine inside my lip 1.5 years ago and it did heal |
| ukberyl | healed naturally Bicky |
| ukberyl | ??? |
| Bicky | yes |
| ukberyl | mine heals and then opens up again. |
| ukberyl | outside bottom lip |
| ukberyl | with sores inside wet bottom lip |
| Bravart | I did noticed in the last year I wake up with my mouth open caused by the neck injury. Am thinking this may be the trigger. |

| Bravart | My biosoy has left me a dead spot and still acts up after a year. |
| drburkhart | Hello everyone. Dr. Rees will be logging on now as well. We welcome you all and especially our guest Dr. Bornstein |
| Bravart | Help?? |
| ............................ aupton joined............. | |
| drburkhart | To all: Did yu enjoy being able to talk with each other before the session today. If so, let me know. That could be something that we would consider doing each session. |
| drbornstein | Hello everybody. It's a pleasure to be with you here this "evening" - it's 9:00 pm here in Switzerland. |
| Bicky | yes it was great |
| ukberyl | Hello Dr. Burkhart...thank you for this opportunity....and yes.. helpful speaking to others |
| ukberyl | It is 8pm here in England!! |
| Bravart | Yes my first time. |
| drrees | Hi folks and hi Michael we certainly appreciate you staying up to participate tonight. |
| Bicky | my first too |
| Bravart | It is 2PM in USA |
| carole | It's 3 pm in Florida |
| ............................ Kara joined............. | |
| drburkhart | For those of you who are first timers, just ask any questions and we will try to answer. |
| Bicky | is there any help |
| ukberyl | Is there a cure for Lichen Planus? |
| ............................ pcgreen joined............. | |
| ............................ claire joined............. | |
| drburkhart | If we do not answer your question completely, you may email us after the session and we will respond to you. |
| Bravart | Is there anything new we try |
| ............................ davegash left............. | |
| drburkhart | Sometimes the screen roles so fast that we cannot fully answe everyone and the question gets lost. |
| ukberyl | New medicines been tried for Lichen Planus...what seems to work the best ? |
| Bravart | Tell us what is new and promising |
| drrees | ukberyl, you certainly cut to the chase. There are ways to control lichen planus and sometimes make it go away but treatment outcomes are inconsistent. |
| ............................ jan joined............. | |
| maggie | Can you recommend a physician on the east cost? |
| ............................ Judah joined............. | |
| ............................ KMN joined............. | |
| drburkhart | Maggie, we can. Where do you live-what city? |
| ukberyl | What ways to "control" Loichen Planus.... |
| drrees | Bravart, what have you tried before? |
| maggie | Lancaster, PA. I would go to John Hopkins or Philadelphia |
| ............................ coolmanr12 joined............. | |
| ............................ kitty joined............. | |
| Bravart | Could we be looking in the wrong place for a cure? |
| Judah | Dr.s - how long is this session going to last? |
| ............................ Wilma joined............. | |
| drrees | ukberyl, the most effective medicines in the tacrolimus family cause some potentially dangerous concerns and so we basically use topical corticosteroids to control most OLP |
| ukberyl | I think "control" rather than a cure would be encouraging for me |
| aupton | judah, the sessions last 1 hour |
| Judah | thanks |
| drburkhart | To everyone: Dr. Bornstein treats many patients at the stomatology center in Switzerland. It would be interesting to find out what his clinic is using for treatment. |
| maggie | How long and how ofter do you recommend using oral steroids? |
| drrees | ukberyl- What have you tried? |
| drbornstein | I totally agree with Dr. Rees. We have also good results in controlling OLP with topical steroids. |
| ukberyl | all topical steroids and cortisone creams |
| ukberyl | which topical steroid????? |
| ............................ dbird joined............. | |
| ............................ Kee joined............. | |
| claire | I was having a flare-up on my gums and my dermatologist prescribed Protopic 0.1% UNG (Tacrolimus), commonly used for eczema) but after I read the "Long-term safety - being unknown if this medicine may be the cause of cancer", I was afraid to use it. My dentist said to use nothing. I rinsed with salt water and the flare-up subsided. Do you have any news on Protopic? |
| Bicky | what about olp |
| maggie | Clobetasol |
| drrees | Maggie, some authorities suggest that it should be used for a relatively short time and then stopped for a rest period. We usually use one that is very safe, fluocinonide and our patients often use it for a prolonged period until they get the lesions under control |
| ............................ cc joined............. | |
| drburkhart | I was reading some of the dialogue before the session began and want to mention that lichen planus is not contagious and cannot be passed from one person to another. |
| pcgreen | my dermatologist has me on triamcinolone acetone dental paste since January. I only use it when I see redness or feel irritation. |
| drbornstein | If OLP shows in other areas (genital/pharyngeal/skin) then also systemic steroids in cooperation with a physician (dermatologists) seems appropriate. |
| maggie | Salt water gives some relief if it is not to serious. |
| drrees | pcgreen- That is the way we also recommend that topicals be used. triamcinolone is probably the weakest steroid that is useful and it is good to know it is keeping you under control. |
| ............................ wcarpent joined............. | |
| ............................ Con joined............. | |
| ............................ Donna joined............. | |
| ukberyl | Protopic 0.3 and 0.1 and most recently I was given CORLAN PELLETS... did relieve some |
| drrees | maggie, the salt water may sooth but it won't treat the olp |
| Bicky | has there been any new research on this that would help us |
| KMN | I have utilized the nystatin/dexamethasone "swish" and orabase steroids with only minimal success. |
| Kee | Is OLP a a progressive disease? Will it become harder to control in time? |
| Bravart | Is this a virus?? |
| claire | Good question, Kee. |
| maggie | If I use a topical steriod for any length of time, I get a yeast infection which is more painful than the OLP. Can I use Nystatin Oral Suspension at the same time I am using the Clobetasol? |
| aupton | welcome to all new visitors. the doctors are drrees, drburkhart and our special guest drbornstein. direct your questions to the doctors and they will answer as soon as they can. transcript will be online later |
| ............................ Dot joined............. | |
| drrees | KMN, we also haven't had much success with rinses but they have the advantage of covering the entire mouth at one time so when they work they are great! |
| pcgreen | KMN-I started out on dexamethasone and it was not effective. |
| ukberyl | my lip and mouth swelll and the little lesions break open. Cortisone creams et. just dry up and then crack the skin |
| ............................ Roland joined............. | |
| ............................ Bud joined............. | |
| drrees | Kee, that is a good question. |
| drburkhart | Kee, some people have OLP for a short time, even one time, and it does not return while others may have problems for years. |
| ............................ Alice joined............. | |
| Bravart | Is it a virus? |
| KMN | My doctor also prescribed Prednisone, however, OLP just "retreated" back to originating site |
| drrees | Kee, we think that once it is controlled it is relatively easy to keep under control with minimal treatment meaning that it doesn't become harder to treat. Obviously more severe lesions take longer to clear up. |
| drrees | Bravart, as far as we know it is not a virus. |
| ukberyl | What drug has proved to be the most effective in healing....so far? |
| ............................ jeh joined............. | |
| drburkhart | To all: Do any of you keep a log of triggers? This is really a good idea. Anything that goes on your skin should be included and anything that you use such as cleaning products or constant contacts. |
| aupton | welcome, new visitors. the doctors will answer your questions as soon as they can. |
| ............................ arkay joined............. | |
| Bravart | What do we call it? A condition? |
| drbornstein | We sometimes see patients with flare ups that have been without pain for years. |
| pcgreen | I was told that it may be one of the autoimmune disorders |
| drrees | ukberyl- most often clobetasol I think but we rarely start with that med |
| KMN | I have been evaluated for allergies by Mayo and they think some of the problem is contact allergies |
| Bravart | THat is interesting. |
| ukberyl | I have not been given Clobetasol unless there is a generic name for it? |
| drrees | KMN- We think so to. Did they find any particular material that causes the reaction for you? |
| ............................ davegash joined............. | |
| maggie | Could I come to Baylor for an evaluation? |
| drburkhart | Bravart-great question. In most scientific writings it is referred to as a disorder. |
| Dot | Is lp curable? |
| drrees | ukberyl-That is the generic name, in the US its commercial name is Temovate. I don't know about the UK. |
| KMN | Yes, chocolate, cinnamin, zinc, nickle....now my dentist suspects dental work done in 2000. |
| drrees | KMN- |
| aupton | to new visitors: welcome. you will not be able to see conversations that occured before you joined the session, however the full session transcript will be online later today. |
| cc | I think mine started with dental work. i'm allergic to nickel |
| Bravart | Am thinking dental work too |
| Kee | I had two family deaths within the past year. Each caused a flare but temovate and dexamethasone brought them back under control |
| carole | What percentage of those with OLP have a burning mouth and mostly burning tounge sensation all the time with lesions very seldom |
| Sue | I have some Temovate. The pharmacist said DO NOT put this in your mouth. Can it be used orally? . |
| KMN | Since I have been given a diagnosis, I continue to have more food and substance allergies |
| Roland | Good afternoon, the lidex cream prescribed for the skin is not doing the job. Any other suggestions? |
| ............................ Kitty joined............. | |
| drrees | KMN -depending on where you live it should be possible to have an allergist identify one or more of those as something to which you are allergic. Most of the time if you have a contact reaction in the mouth it is because you have less saliva than normal. |
| Bravart | I do everyday. |
| drrees | Roland, you'd better talk to a dermatologist about that. |
| ukberyl | That;s interesting.....dental work....a possibility...!! I think my saliva is too acidic and plentiful!! |
| KMN | I agree, I have noticed a positive change since I have switched to Biotene toothpaste |
| KMN | Does anyone have problems with LP in reproductive areas, I do. |
| ukberyl | Biotene toothpaste....info Please? |
| ............................ Shirley joined............. | |
| Roland | I met with Dr. Glass in Dallas. She recommended continuing with Lidex. What was 2 weeks ago |
| pcgreen | Dental work can be a contact. A nickel or mercury wisdom tooth filling made an imprint on the inside of my cheek. The tooth was removed and I got better. I have always be allergic to costume jewelry, also. |
| drrees | Sue, we use it in the mouth but you are right, it has only been approved by the FDA for use on skin. There are many papers describing its use in the mouth however. |
| Dot | My dentist feels that my lichen plantus is caused by metal fillings. Does removing them and replacing with other material will be an answer to this problem? |
| maggie | I only use Biotene toothpaste and a very soft brush. I rinse with salt water. |
| drbornstein | OLP can be worsend by insufficient dental hygiene - unfortunately, often a painful OLP makes cleaning a hard job. So we tell patients to see their hygienist 3-4 times a year. |
| drburkhart | KMN, most patients seem to do well with Biotene and some of the less flavored toothpaste. Do not use alcohol containing mouthrinses. |
| Sue | I also have problems in the vaginal area. |
| ............................ Kathyorange joined............. | |
| drrees | Roland, I agree with whatever Dr. Glass told you. She knows more about lichen planus than some others |
| ............................ crazyhos joined............. | |
| KMN | I joined a little late, could any of the experts recommend a support group or expert in Jacksonville, FL area? |
| maggie | I have vaginal problems as well. I never had a biospy and do not have a sympathic gyn doctor. |
| drbornstein | Oro-genital OLP should be evaluated together with a dermatologist or gynecologist. |
| drburkhart | Sue, this is often not connected by dentists or by the OBGYN or generalist. If you are female or male and have any infections or problems with genitals you should let all the healthcare people who are treating you know. |
| Shirley | Type hereShirley asks I understand Fluocinoide is a strong steroid. Steroids affect my digestive system. Truancinolone Acetonide seems to effective. What is your opinion |
| Bravart | I have an old wisdom tooth with a old filling, about 55 years. Could be that?? |
| ............................ suej joined............. | |
| ............................ Kara left............. | |
| drrees | Dot, it might but be careful. We believe you should be allergy tested for the materials in your fillings before doing this. Even if you test positive it is probably best to remove one filling and see if that helps the lesions in the tissue that contact that filling. It can get very expensive to go in and replace all fillings especially if it turns out not to help |
| KMN | Maggie and Dr B- I have had biopsies on both areas and it's never conclusive and now my Dentist is looking at dental work since I had so many metal allergies diagnosed recently. |
| Sue | Maggie, if you are in Houston, Dr. Raymond Kaufman at Methodist is one of the few and maybe only expert in the city on LP. |
| crazyhos | Type hereI have had some success using Colostrum Supplements and Immune inhancers. Is this a recognized therapy or, has anyone else had similiar experience. tks |
| drrees | Shirley, stick with the triamcinolone it is very bland |
| ............................ jan left............. | |
| ukberyl | What are Colostrum Supplements please....and immune enhancers? |
| Bicky | what type of doctor should we be seeing a dentist or dematolgist (spelling not sure) |

| Kee | A dentist turned my olp around U of MN has a great one. |
| drburkhart | Bravart, someone would probably want to write up a case study on an amalgam that old. Is it still sealed or have they told you that you have some leakage around the margins? |
| drrees | crazyhos- I know of no controlled studies using colostrum or immune enhancers. |
| drbornstein | Sue: Sometimes metal dental materials can worsen an OLP. We then try a patch test with an experienced dermatologist and remove a trial filling in close contact to a lesion. |
| ............................ Shirley left............. | |
| drrees | cc. Contact Dr. Burkhart later and she can try to find someone |
| cc | ty |
| carole | Any medication for burning mouth sensation with no lesions? |
| drbornstein | Carole: Have you done a blood test? Maybe you have an iron deficiency - a very common reason for BMS |

| drrees | Carole, there are some that seem to work but the real challenge is to try to find out why the burning is occurring. I will be happy to discuss that with you later but not on our olp forum |
| drburkhart | cc. I do have the name of someone in phoenix. I can get back to you when you email me. |
| ............................ Judah joined............. | |
| KMN | Are there any incidents of patients being allergic to titanium. I have a implant w/that metal. |
| ukberyl | Dr. Bornstein.....what is BMS please???? I haVE IRON DEFICIENCY |
| cc | dr. burkhart. ty |
| ............................ kitty left............. | |
| ............................ kitty joined............. | |
| drbornstein | BMS = Burning Mouth Syndrom |
| Kee | It seems that the medication that works for one person does not work for another. Why is that? |
| Bravart | Titanium is in my whole body! |
| drbornstein | I'm not aware of an allergy to a dental implant with commercially pure titanium |
| ............................ coolmanr12 joined............. | |
| drrees | KMN-titanium is one of the most inert metals known. There are only a few cases of titanium allergy reported world wide. We have seen two in the past 22 years. If that is a consideration the lesions should be confined just to the area where the implants have been placed |
| ............................ aupton left............. | |

| Bravart | What did they use 56 years ago? |
| Bravart | Dental filling that is. |
| ............................ dbird joined............. | |

| drburkhart | To all: What are you all doing to combat some of the allergy symptoms. How many have are on a regular exercise program and are trying to determine what causes the OLP to become worse? If you want to begin logging information, try to determine everything that you come in contact with and write it down. |
| Kitty | I completed dental implantsearly this year. My LP is no better or worse and I am happy with the implant. Scratchy food--pretzels, chips, hard cookies irritate my mouth. I suppose because the lining is already irritated. |
| ............................ Bravart left............. | |
| drrees | davegash, lip lesions are usually treated with a real mild steroid if the lesions are on the outside of the lip. |
| ukberyl | sTEROID CREAMS HAVE NOT HELPED MY LOWER LIP LESIONS |
| jeh | my tongue has been bad for over 6 years. It now bleeds every time I brush my teeth. Nothing that I have used has helped except for taking a two week course of steriods which is causing other health problems. Is there any thing out there I could try? |
| ukberyl | sorry for caps. |
| davegash | have had no success with steroids |
| drrees | Kitty, I agree, implants should not be the problem except in very rare cases |
| Sue | Can OLP involve the esophagus? During an EGD, the MD saw scarring in my e* and asked if I had swallowed lye as a child. I have had a number of EGD's because swallowing becomes difficult. |
| dbird | when I do dentist mouth becomes very irritate. Does olp cause bleeding as my dental hygenist contually wants to send me to a dentist who treats regular gun disease. I feel it is the olp most of the time . What would you say. |

| drrees | jeh- do you know that you have lichen planus on your tongue? Has it been biopsied? |
| ukberyl | Can you tell me what physical difference with an ulcer on tongue or lp? |
| jeh | Right now just my family Doctor, but I see the dematolgist once a year. Yes this has been biopsied. |
| drburkhart | Sue, in addition to genital lesions, you can have esophogeal lesions. Again, everyone should know about the OLP |
| jc123 | Can a biopsy be done if only having problem with border of lips? |
| drbornstein | jeh - I agree with Dr. Rees. It's important to biopsy lesions that start to bleed and do not heal. |
| Kitty | Have the dental hygenist use children's cleaning tools and dentrifice when cleaning your teeth. Milder than adult materials. |
| drrees | dbird, OLP will make it hard for you to clean your mouth well and that can lead to regular gum disease. We did a study a couple years ago and found that patients with gum OLP had more periodontal disease than othere of their same age and sex |
| ukberyl | ?my biopsy will not heal |
| ............................ Alice left............. | |
| ............................ arkay left............. | |
| maggie | I will not let a dental hygenist clean my teeth. I have my dentist do it every three months. That has gotten my OLP under control. |
| pcgreen | What mouthwashes do you recommend, besides Biotene? |
| drburkhart | Kitty, read our "Recall Visit" protocol on the web site. |
| drrees | jc123, A biopsy can be done almost anywhere. |

| davegash | dr,have you been around any hormone thearpy,for lp |
| ............................ claire joined............. | |
| Kee | How often should the olp lesions be biopsied to check for cancer? |
| drbornstein | Sometimes biopsies of OLP dont heal that good - that's right. It has been referred as the Koebner phenomenon. But it is important to be sure of the exact diagnosis. |
| cc | will chewing gum increase the saliva in my mouth, and will it help the olp? |
| davegash | dr.,what about raditation for lower lip,lp |
| drrees | davegash, we studied that a few years ago also and found no relationship |
| jc123 | can lp cause blood in nasal cavity? if so how should that be treated? |
| KMN | Do you know of any OLP/LP experts in Jacksonville florida area? |
| ............................ Bud joined............. | |
| ............................ Alice joined............. | |
| drrees | davegash- we don't recommend radiation. To many serous side effects |
| Bud | I avoid alcohol, hot sauces, etc. Is it ok to use a salt water mouth rinse? |
| Tim | Ive had LP for over 15yrs, why wont it go away??? |
| drburkhart | KMN, contact me after the session and I will give you some names. It may be a few days before I can get back to you. |
| ukberyl | Can you tell me about CORLAN PELLETS....HYdrocortisone tablets...did help soreness. |
| drburkhart | Bud, do you find that the salt water helps? |
| drrees | Kee- the decision about re-biopsies varies from one person to another. We have many patients who don't need another biopsy and we have some who we biopsy every 3 months. It depends on what the original and follow-up biopsies show |
| davegash | dr,what about heprian,shot under neath the skin |
| maggie | Do you recommend laser surgery to remove scar tissue? |
| Dot | Is a spider Nive (white web) connected with LP? |
| ............................ Donna joined............. | |
| drbornstein | Maggie - laser can help with scar tissue but we do not have good results curing symptomatic OLP lesions |
| drburkhart | Dot, it is found in a particular form of OLP called reticular and the "spider web" is called Wickam's Striae. All forms do not always have this characteristic. |
| Kee | drburkhart: you didn't ask me but I use salt water rinse after eating anything at all. It helps a lot and my local dentist thinks it helps in keeping cavities down. |
| ............................ aupton left............. | |
| drrees | ukberyl- That is a treatment studied in the UK many years ago. It was effective if you let the pellet dissolve as slowly as possible. It did however, make one susceptible to yeast infection and there is a certain amount of systemic uptake. Not much but more than most topical steroids |
| dbird | Can you tell me if the mouth lichen planus is related to the vaginal lichen planus. Foods bother the mouth so could it be bothering the other also? |
| ............................ aupton joined............. | |
| davegash | dr,what about steroid shot directly in to lesion on lower lip,lp |
| drrees | dbird- We don't know why there is a correlation but it is doubtful that food allergies would cause the vaginal lesions |
| drburkhart | Kee, salt water heals and there is no problem using it. Especially if you are getting benefit. |
| jc123 | Can blood in the nasal cavity be associated with lp? if so how should it be treated? would vasoline on a qtip be ok? |
| drrees | davegash- We do that sometimes but we would rather not because that gives you a greater quantigy of steroid into your system. |
| ............................ suej left............. | |
| KMN | Do you coordinate studies w/GYN doctors regarding the corollation of OLP and LP in reproductive areas? |
| ukberyl | ?Is there a common denominator of diabetes 2 amongst lp sufferers? |

| drbornstein | jc123 - if you have constant nasal bleeding, it think it's important to see an ENT to rule oout other causes than olp. |
| drrees | ukberyl- We have looked at that too and did not find a significantly increased number of diabetics in our patients with olp. We do find, however, that some patients can have a lichenoid reaction to diabetic medications |
| Kitty | I also have very dry mouth and use Biotine Oral Balance and Biotine gum. |
| jc123 | thanks |

| drrees | KMN- we don't have any joint studies with ob docs but would love to do so. |
| davegash | dr,if steroid cream has not been working would you try injection into lesion next |
| ............................ Bicky joined............. | |
| dbird | I know because I have been biopsied and have been treated for several years for the vaginal but longer with the mouth. Feel I have had it though longer before anyone figured it out. I have yeast infections and they are treated as well. My derm person says they go hand in hand with one another. Do you agree? |
| drrees | davegash- I couldn't possibly anwswer that without seeing you |
| jc123 | drbor, is lp of the lips a lack of blood flow to that area? |
| maggie | A gel works better for me than a cream |
| Dot | It OLP contagious? |
| ............................ Kara left............. | |
| ............................ jeh left............. | |
| drrees | dbird- yes, in fact we recommend that any woman who has gum lesions of olp see an ob/gyn for a gental evaluation |
| drburkhart | dbird, this seems to be a problem for women with OLP. We just tabulated some data and it appeared to be a problem. |
| suej | Is there anything I should tell my gyn re: LP. My vaginal LP minor compared to oral. I'm not seeking treatment for that but wondering if my gyn should be on watch for something |
| drbornstein | Dot - no it's not. |
| ............................ claire left............. | |
| arkay | Type hereI have had two biopsies 4 years apart. Thefirst was diagnosed as Lichen Planus. The second was Benign Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid. Are they the same thing? |
| crazyhos1 | Have any confirming studies been done to prove the adverse effects of Soda pop on OLP? |
| kitty | Can I buy Biotine in the U.k. |
| drburkhart | Dot, no it is not contagious, but candida which is often found in the treatment of OLP can be passed to others and the person can reinfect themselves. So you need to be fully treated to get the candida under control. |
| KMN | Is anyone pushing for joint studies, I seem like a classic case, I have severe involvement in the reproductive regions; cannot get a normal Pap test done. |

| davegash | dr,i am treating lp,with 3mg heprian every 7 day,streoid cream daliy,everythang is fine but lower lip is stubern,any ideas |
| maggie | Biotine is available online |
| drrees | sue- it isn't clear whether or not the vaginal lesions have been diagnosed as lp. If so they need to be watched and treated if necessary. (that is, if they become painful or show any tissue changes |
| Dot | Can a person get OLP from dental offices (Unsterile equipment)? |
| cc | Does oral candida always appear as "white stuff?" Or can it just be red? |
| drrees | DOT- No |
| ............................ Kara joined............. | |
| ............................ Judah joined............. | |
| drrees | cc- It is often red, the white lesions are only one form of candidiasis. |
| ............................ coolmanr12 joined............. | |
| ............................ jan joined............. | |
| jc123 | I also have problems with my bottom lip, Anyone have proven treatment? |
| drbornstein | arkay - sometimes it is hard for the pathologist to exactly diagnose these auto-immunological diesaeses. If it is pemphigoid, i would also consult a dermatologist. Maybe a serologic/blood test can help to definitely diagnose the condition. |
| ............................ mssl joined............. | |
| ............................ Kathyorange left............. | |
| drburkhart | We have a link to Laclede on our web site under the "links" section. The products work for most patients but not everyone. So it is sometimes just trying it individually. |
| Tim | will direct injections on lower lip flatten lip?? |
| ............................ carole left............. | |
| dbird | I use protopic on both areas? What are you thoughts on this? How often should the vaginal lp be checked out? Sometimes I get put off when it is about a year and then when longer he seems to be upset? I am confused to say the least. |
| Dot | How is candidiasis and OLP the same? |
| ............................ carole joined............. | |
| drrees | davegash- From what you say I beleive that is something you should discuss with your dermatologist or dentist. No suggestions without seeing you |
| Bicky | will olp go down into the throat and cause flam to build up |
| jc123 | dr rees, i am close to Baylor, how can I see you one on one? |
| drburkhart | dbird, one of the experts in the area of treatment is Dr. Dore Eisen. If you email me I can send you some of his articles that you could share with your doctor. He is in Ohio. |

| drbornstein | Dot - use of topic steroids create a good environment for candida to grow. So candida is often a side effect of OLP treatment. |
| davegash | drrees, have you had any succes with heprian therapy |

| aupton | This is the admin, everyone. We have 15 minutes left with our guest and the doctors from Baylor College of Dentistry. Please begin concluding your strings of conversation. The full transcript will be online later this afternoon, and the room will be left open for a short period of time after the session so that you may exchange contact information if you choose. 15 minutes to go. |

| drrees | dbird- It really isn't possible to give a blanket answer to those questions. We suggest a recall interval for our olp patients depending on how well they are under control. Your gyn would probably do the same. Ask him/her what is a reasonable follow-up. We don't use protopic any more because of safety concerns. However, it is a very effective drug for treating lp probably in either or both areas. |
| drbornstein | Additionally, candida sometimes grow on white lesions in the mouth because these lesions offer ideal nutrition. |
| cc | I was told that candida "wipes" off - is that always true? |
| drrees | davegash- We don't use it because of the need for frequent injections. The literature looks pretty good on it however |
| maggie | Can you provide a list of doctors that treat oral and/or vaginal lichen planus in the USA |
| drbornstein | Therefore we routinely test for candida colonization in biopsies and with brush. |
| drburkhart | Hi Bill, the screen is rolling fast. We are not ignoring you if you have commented on anything. I just didn't want to overlook you. You may be a listener today which is fine. |
| ukberyl | Which doctor , Maxilliofacial, dermotologist, dentist.should be in control of my care, or is it a combined effort? I have several just stumped, and don't know what to do for me anymore I think? |
| Donna | A Vulva Clinic will be of help for those with Vaginal L/P It helped me.. |
| Magdelaina | I have been diagnosed with LP since 1999. I used steroid cream which got rid of Lp on my legs and mouth, but since 2004, I have been diagnosed with LP on Vulva area can you recommend a good medication to get rid of Lp on Vulva area? |
| drrees | cc- candida usualy wipes off and may leave a bleeding surface under it but certainly not always |
| drbornstein | cc - not always. Chronic hyperplastic candida for example at the corner of the mouth not. |
