| drrhodus | OLP is NOT a virus and should not be treated with antiviral drugs |
| marie | Is it safe to use cyclosporin mouthwash while on lipitor if you don't swallow mouthwash? |
| vwb | Actually it is a company out of India off the Internet believe it or not! Skeptical at first, but it worked and I've used homeopathic for other ailments for years. Wasn't surprised. |
| drrees | Pep, there are a few papers suggesting a possible viral association but that has not been studied extensively. As far as we know OLP is not caused by a virus. |
| pn | tO THOSE WHO DOES NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO MAKE SURE YOUR DR. CAN PERSCRIBE PAIN MANAGEMENT TREATMENT . |
| Shar | I've had OLP for 3 yrs, mild to severe, how can I tell if it turns to oral cancer? |
| TaylorsBaba | Has anyone tried Laser treatments for OLP? |
| drburkhart | elcoopo, could you expand on that. I know that it sounds strange, but I continue to get emails on this. What kind of candy? |
| Margit | I am keeping it under control with advantan cream and daktarin when I have an attack. |
| Gold | My lp got much worse after I had a biopsy. It has spread from right side of mouth to tounge. |
| lion | clobetasol gel works well as topical |
| jo | I have autoimmune conditions, but my hospital says lichen planus is not autoimmune - is this right? |
| Ally3 | great i just had a second biospy today |
| TaylorsBaba | I had OLP turn to Oral Cancer it is very important to have your dentist check your mouth carefully. |
| CoKo | Does anyone have diabetes, hypothyrodism and OLP? |
| pn | a STUDY DONE SHOWED A HIGH INCIDENC OF RECOVERY (LOVONEX.) |
| Ruthanne | Can any help my nail to recover as part of the tiny nail has been affected and no longer comes in |
| drrhodus | OLP has been documented to be associate d with oral cancer. It is unknown whether it actually TRANSFORMS into oral cancer, but it is possible. It should be evaluated by a qualified expert on REGULAR intervals. |
| drrees | TaylorsBaba, there have been reports of treatment with lasers for at least 15 years. The problem is that OLP moves around the mouth so if it is removed surgically or by laser it will probably recur somewhere else. |
| maryc | what would be the diagnostic connection fro removing amalgams? |
| TaylorsBaba | drrees do you recommend laser treatment? |
| kath | WILL ANYONE EVER FIND A CAUSE FOR OLP |
| drburkhart | Tayloes Baba, Only a small % of OLP becomes cancerous. However, you are so right. Careful monitoring is important with any lesions. Be sure to read our "Guidlines to Recall Visits on the site. |
| CoKo | vwb: would you tell me the name of that company in India? I read about it and was tempted to contact them....... |
| mars | do you need follow up blood work while on protopic like people taking it orally? |
| Ally3 | is there any permanent chat room, i feel so isolated with this olp |
| elcoopo | i have had my mout back to almost normal by sucking butterscotch hard candy but i think that any hard candy will work dr.s seem to think it deters the good cells from attacking other good cells in the mouth. it ha worked for me and thre others that i know of. |
| drrees | TaylorBaba, no for the reasons I mentioned above. I think topical medications are still the most predictable treatment. |
| Gold | Is it OK to donate blood when you have olp? |
| Deb | Recently my mouth lesions have been bleeding when I brush my teeth, is that a common symptom? |
| Judah | after wishing dexamethasone in the mouth, are you supposed to swallow? and if so, could insomnia be a side effect? |
| Gail | Type hereI have been diagnosed with lichen scelorsis and now lichen planus. What is the connection, if any? |
| Margit | I have at times red patches on my skin that itch can this be part of LP? |
| drrhodus | OLp appears to have multifactorial etiology and it will be difficult to find a single cause. We are presently doing genetic research on OLP. |

| drrees | Deb, when you have olp of the gums it is hard to keep your teeth as clean as usual. They also are irritated, so you should expect some bleeding. See your dentist or dental hygienist fairly often . |
| Margit | Thank you drrhodus |
| TaylorsBaba | drrees I want to have my fillings removed because I am allergic to metal and my oral cancer what do you think? |
| mainebob | i occasionally have skin blotches also |
| susan | I have had 30 yr history of LP first on ankles and wrists, they disappeared and about 7 years ago developed LP on back over spine, had PUVA therapy |
| kath | SISTER HAS HAD FALSE TEETH FOR 40 YEARS |
| MarkDu | vwb, do you have that Indian website address (homeopathy)? |
| Raj | I have been having OLP and Genital LP for more than 6 years now... |
| ............................ KAREN joined............. | |
| drrhodus | There is indeed a relationship with lichen sclerosis and LP. |
| Ally3 | my gums are receeding a lot since olp is there anyway to stop them |
| drburkhart | All-If you are female and have lichen planus, it can also be found vaginally in some cases. So make your OBGYN person aware that you have it orally. |
| susan | Mark: have u or someone else tried the Indian Dr therapy? |
| vwb | MarkDu www.classicalhomeopathy.com |
| pn | llOVONEX AFTER 11 WEEKS HAS GIVEN ME THE BEST RESPONSE i've been on numurous treatments i.e. soratane, puva, thalidimide, ect I've been battling the worst pain for over 7 years i;am feeling much better. |
| CoKo | thanks vwb |
| drrees | TaylorBaba, I don't think I can answer the question about the amalgams. What does your dentist say. We look for specific signs of amalgam allergy before we suggest removal and we prefer an allergy test. |
| drrhodus | Gum recession is indeed common in OLP. BOTH must be treated. |
| Morten | hi my dermatologist has told me that I've got lichen ruber (in Denmark) - is this the same as lichen planus |
| KAREN | I have been prescribed Tacrolimus but since it suppresses the immune system I am hesitant to use it because |
| aupton | NO CROSS CHATTING, PLEASE, FOLKS. KEEP QUESTIONS SHORT AND ADDRESS THEM TO THE DOCTORS. THANKS. |
| KAREN | of side effects |
| drrhodus | Morten- yes they are the same |
| MarkDu | Thank you vwb |
| Windy | I have olp and LP on my scalp. I use Olux Foam. on scalp. Lost quite a bit of hair. Anyone know of any other treatments? |
| Shar | To all the Doctors, thank you so much for this chat room...there are so few people who know about this OLP. Thanks again! |
| lion | how are the gums treated? I take dilantin as well so I have hyperplasia. |
| drrees | Karen, topical tacrolimus doesn't have the same immunesuppressive effect as systemic tacrolimus. |
| maryc | is there an actual test for amalgam allergies (or is it for a specific compound)? |
| pn | One of the first treatment I tried was homopathy-no luck just big bills. |
| Raj | Hi Doctor..I hav eno idea hwt to do..Its been more than 6 years now..Its not itchy...neither on genital nor in mouth |
| drrhodus | Short term bursts of tacrolimus and/or steriods will not necessarily suppress the immune system, but must be closely monitored |
| Morten | I've got it on hands feet and genitals along with a raised blood count of eosinophilic granulocytes. Is this normal for lichen planus? |
| ............................ Gail left............. | |
| drrees | maryc, yes you can be tested for the different materials present in amalgams. |

| CoKo | Doctors: do you think OLP should be treated with homeopathy? Do you know about this Dr. Sha from India? |
| drrees | Morten, that suggests some type of allergic reaction. Are you taking some medications.? |
| TaylorsBaba | drrees I am in the process of having a metal patch test done my dentist agrees. |
| elcoopo | el coopo: anyone tha would like to know my 6 years of olp and the sucess that i have had with sucking hard cand y can contact me at email address: elcoop@prodigy.net.mx will be happy to provide a full explanation of my success. |
| Jo | I'll try again, oral erosive lp - will it hinder gum regrowth after an extraction |
| drburkhart | Windy, there was a recent article in J of Dermatology on good results for the treatment of skin disorders using Biofeedback techniques. Obviously this is to reduce stress levels, but it specifically cited the scalp area. It is Dermatologic Therapy 2003 |
| drrhodus | I really cannot comment much on homeopathic medicine, but I beleive that it might have benefit |

| CoKo | thank you drrhodus |
| TaylorsBaba | drrees My dentist is concerned that if I am allergic should I worry about posts inside the bone that are part of bridgework? That is where the LP is the worst. |
| ............................ BJ joined............. | |

| Jo | LP is never under control orally or vaginally should I take systemic meds prior to extractions |
| drrhodus | Well the biopsies remove soem of the tissue which is already thin and sensitive. However, biopsies are VERY IMPORTANT ! |
| jo | what is best speciality for treatment of this condition. Not much seems to be know about it in UK |
| drrees | Gold, there are several possible reasons but we would need to know more about your situation to comment. |
| cdk012 | I tried few treatments. The first one was taking Sterocort 4 mg pills by sucking them and it helped but the problem is that I'm suffering from high blood pressure and I can't take it. I also got a mouth wash that contains cortisone ampules and refined water. It heled but again it's bad for my blood prusure. The last treatment ws injecting cortisone into my gumes but this didn't helped. Looking for some treatment that might help me. |

| bilbla | I have Lichen Planus .I was prescribed Diprosone and Nilstat mixed to apply. Would this ointment help? |

| drrees | Gold, it should be fine to give blood and there is no evidence that it is transmissible. |
| Margit | Biotene toothpast and Periogard have help my mouth . I go every 8 weeks to see my dentist |
| drrhodus | Deb...you are corrrect. steriods can be safely used only in periodic bursts. They also can cause oral candidiasis(thrush) so that should be treated also. |
| Raj | Hello dress ..is this LP precancerous |
| Ally3 | doctors do white tooth filings case problems or is it only the metal type |
| elcoopo | elcoopo: happy to provide my olp success- my e mail address: elcoopo@prodigy.net.mx |
| jo | Dr Rees - thanks. So far none have seemed to know much - most info. is on this site! |
| drrees | Raj, good .Please let us know how it works out and be sure to tell us what it is that works if it works. |
| lion | I am told LP is associated with HCV |
| susan | Dr: accutane has made my tongue 80% better in 5 weeks |
| Mary | What is HCV? |
| drburkhart | Hi Margit! Yes, we have found Biotene can be tolerated by most patients and the tarter control products usually cause the patients problems. |
| Ally3 | just for info i have been using aloe vera gel as a mouthwash it has given me the most relief so far |
| lion | Hepatitis C |
| GrmaB | is accutane used topically? |
| drrees | Raj, when you review the transcripts you'll find this has already been addressed. There is a low incidence of association with some types of OLP but the exact nature of the relationship is not yet clear. |
| drrhodus | Margit...yes Biotene is great because if doesn't contain many of the irritants, whiteners, tarter control, phosphates, etc. which can be irritants |
| susan | accutane is pill |
| Windy | Is Lidex Gel cortisone? |
| drburkhart | Lion, we have some articles on HCV on the LP site. |
| jo | The oral dept at my local hospital said 'nothing really known about lp' - will print stuff from this site and hand round on next visit! |
| drrhodus | lion...yes Hep C may contribute to OLP |

| susan | Dr please comment to me regarding my high blood pressure and cyclosporine |
| bilbla | Dr REES Could you tell me if Dirosone and Nilsta help me for the condition of lichen Planus |
| Deb | Can you refer me to an autoimmune specialist who deals with lichen planus (all three types) in the Boston area? |
| drrees | lion, yes there may be an association with Hep C. It doesn't happen often in the US but has been reported fairly commonly in southern Europe. |
| Margit | Dr Burckhart I found biotene and all I know through this site Thank you so much |
| drrhodus | Windy...yes Lidex is a type of corticosteriod which may help , BUT there are others |
| Ally3 | i cannot use biotene but JASON ORAL COMFORT toothpaste has helped |

| drburkhart | Deb. We have some wonderful people in the Boston area. One such person is Dr. Steven Sonis at Harvard. Contact me after the session and I will give you his contact information. |
| drrees | Susan, if you are taking systemic cyclosporine it may be a factor but it has not been reported as a direct cause. Topical cyclosporine is probably safer to use. |
| drrhodus | Morten...there is no doubt that OLP is related to stress ! |
| nita | Can you refer me to a dentist in San Jose Calif. area who treats OLP ?Type here |
| susan | it is 100 mg pill taken once a day |
| pn | is anybody else out there on Lovonex, would like to know your expeirence? |

| jo | does anyone know of autoimmune specialists in UK. Have not been able to find any so far - I have other autoimmune problems too! |
| drburkhart | nita, contact us after the session for a name. |
| wec | Type here: does anyone with OLP have what feels like fibrous material in their mouth? That was my first symptom aside from one irriated spot |
| drrhodus | Judah...sometimes the doctor may have you swallow, but ususally we have you rinse thoroughly 4-5 minutes, then spit |
| drrees | TaylorBaba. Dental implants are usually made of titanium and that is a very inert metal. I have only seen one patient who was allergic to titanium and she did not have lichen planus. As far as tolerating implants in the presence of OLP, I think it is not a problem. |
| Judah | thankx |

| drrhodus | Gold...Lidex is good..we usually recommend only 10-14 days and then go off for an eqaul time. There are less potent meds that can be used in the meantime. |
| drrees | Coko, maybe. Our data shows a slightly increased incidence in diabetics but usually it is due to a lichenoid reaction to the medications being taken. We don't have any documentation that insulin causes a problem but it may on occasion. |
| pn | I also tried accupuncture early with my symptems the accupuctution put needles in my mouth which created more leasions be very careful |

| drburkhart | Ally3-sounds like a good chance. Have you tried chap stick on the lips before you go to bed? Also the gel lubricant by biotene may help. If you have the burning and dryness, you may want to be evaluated |

| drrees | lion, if you treat the dryness it can reduce the burning but sometimes some specific medications are needed. What you are dealing with does not sound like OLP. The subject of burning mouth is too complex to address tonight. |
| drrhodus | Carol...you really should only use steriods for 10-12 days consecutively then go off for an equal time |

| Ruthanne | drs..is hydrocort/tetracyc/diph ok to use half hr before eating and is there any danger in continued use of same? |
| wec | Type here I got disconnected |
| Rosalie | Hello, Doctors, I just got here and am interested in the magic mouthwash. Is this something that is unique to you or do all dentists have their own? My OLP is in remission or at least I don't have open lesions, but I do have burning mouth syndrome. I have use clonazapam occasionally and that helps. |
| drrhodus | We see a lot of burning mouth which may or may not be related to OLP |
| Lea | Lea has anyone tried Vit. B-12 for the lesions in the mouth and tongue. I've had OLP since 1989 and I've come to use B-12 every time I have a flare up and it seems to control it quite well by putting a tablet on the lesion or rough area and let it melt. It doesn't burn or hurt and the place gets better with the first tablet. |
| Amy | I was diagnosed six months ago withOLP had biopsy done and a few days ago came back in the exact same place should I have another biopsy? |
| drrees | Shar, not as far as we know. However, trauma may make the tissue peel away so you be the judge. If it causes soreness, then discuss with your husband. |
| drrhodus | Rosalie...perhaps scroll backwards to see what we already said |
| drburkhart | Everyone, please read our section on the site at www.tambcd.edu/lichen on "how to apply corticosteroids" We find that many people do not know how to effectively apply the meds. |
| lion | I have had biopsies (2) I have oral LP and LP in vagina and scalp and flexor surfaces - being seen by dentist and derm. |
| wec | do people with olp feel like parts of their mouth lining is peeling off, or pulling tightly around teeth, or getting wrapped around tounge? |
| drrhodus | Lea ...vit. B-12 may help in some cases |
| Deb | Doctors, does drinking alcohol make the condition worse. I do not notice any burning or irritation in the mouth when I have a glass of wine? |
| jo | my lp diagnosed by biopsy. Taken prednisolone for 14 years for other condition. Only get lp in one area and side of tongue. Not offered any other treatment. Any ideas for self help |
| aupton | TRANSCRIPT FOR TODAY'S SESSION WILL BE POSTED TO THE WEB SITE TOMMORROW. |
| drrees | Amy, that is something you need to discuss with the doctor who did the biopsy. It is not unusual, however, for the lesions to recur. |
| susan | Drs..after being on cyclosporine 100 mg qd for 2 yr and accutane 40 mg qd for 5 wks and now have high blood pressure...do u think this is related to meds |
| drrhodus | Deb...usually alcohol does make it worse unless you take enough to make you forget about you OLP |

| CoKo | Thank you doctors, I would like to stay but have to go. I'm looking forward the next session. bye |
| Carol | I have lichen planus, diagnosed through biopsy. It is really frighttening as my mother died from complication of a 6 year battle with cancer. Right now they have me using a steroid inhaler which I focus the steroid on the lesions. My mouth is so sensitive to spicy foods now and the lesions often feel raw and realy make eating difficult! |
| Amy | What are the chances of coming down with oral cancer |
| ............................ CoKo left............. | |
| drburkhart | Wec. what does your dentist or healthcare provider say about your "strings" around the teeth? |
| Rosalie | I can't scroll back...it starts where I entered the group. I'll be able to read it all after the session is over. I'll just listen on out. |
| drrhodus | Carol...this is common with OLP...have it checked FREQUENTLY |
| wec | they don't know. my doctor says maybe dry mouth-- will see him tomorrow. |
| wec | what do you say??? about the string like stuff |
| ............................ mainebob joined............. | |
| drrees | Deb, the alcohol probably doesn't have a direct effect but it may burn . There are some ingredients in wine that some people are allergic to but it doesn't sound like that is a problem for you. |
| Carol | I do have it checked every 3-4 months . Especially with the oraal cancer history of my mothers. |
| Carol | What more can be done to treat this condition? Are there any encouraging cures being researched? |
| wec | I'm also in almost constant pain |
| drburkhart | Wec, it could be just sloughing because of the dryness or possible allergic response. However, there are other "disease states" in which patients report "strings" in their mouths. |
| Ally3 | drs. i sometimes have lots of very very small clear blisters in areas of my mouth normally when my mouth is burning alot is this normal olp |

| wec | can you name an example of a "disease state" with strings in the mouth? |
| drrhodus | Rosalie..the Magic mouthwash is variable and must be made up by the pharmacist upon presciption form the dr. |
| ............................ joy joined............. | |
| drrees | mars, the reflux can make your mouth sore because of the acids and that might worsen OLP. It won't cause it, however. |
| wec | he did a blood test for scheraderma... said I don't have it. |
| Shar | Pain often causes me to clinch jaw and teeth...sometimes I'm not even aware I'm doing it. |
| Carol | Who is doing the studies? I live in Arkansas where the top oral cancer doctor is but do you know how to find someone really up on this condition in my area. Right now my only choice is an ENT. |
| wec | I take it this feeling of strings in the mouth is not common with OLP???? |

| ............................ canadatoo joined............. | |
| drburkhart | Wec, yes there have been reported psychological problems with patients who feel the strings are always there and there is nothing that can be diagnosed. No, they are not common with OLP. |
| drrhodus | Joy...yes |
| pn | carol first thing find a dr. that can provide pain management, that was the point when i was able to get my life back in order , fortunatly i live in florida where drs are requred to provide pain management , dr. burk please comment |
| Carol | My mouth is so senssivity that I have concerns about dental cleanings. What is the best way to approach this with Olp |
| drrhodus | Gold...not necessarily, but they can be related...be aware |
| drburkhart | Wec, that does not mean that you do not have the strings-as I said, maybe you have severe sloughing. Let you doctor know this because it can be extremely distracting for you. |
| ............................ margit joined............. | |
| Ruthanne | I have aloe verde plants in my backyard and I open one stem and apply the jell. Any comments on this. |
| wec | they are about peeling of my gums and mouth tissue-- isn't that a part of OLP? |
| Carol | They don't seem to do much in the way of pain management. What can be done for that? |
| jo | is olp an autoimmune disease. My hospital says not. I already have other autoimmune diseases, and this is a new one for me. |
| mars | carol, i had worries about a teeth cleaning and i was sore for a couple of days and then much improvement. keeping your mouth cleean is the best thing you can do |
| wec | is severe sloughing a part of OLP or some other disease? |
| margit | I was disconected back now. |
| drrees | Carol, be sure that you hygienist knows how sore your mouth is. If he or she is very gentle it is much less likely to make things more sore. Meanwhile it is very important to have frequent cleanings because the soreness causes problems with oral hygiene. |
| ............................ fredly left............. | |
| joy | I feel I have my OLP under pretty good control by using biotene toothpaste and mouthwash and rinsing with mylanta before I go to bed at night. Avoiding alcohol and hot foods helps, too |
| drrhodus | Carol...this ios common, the DH or DDS should be aware of the OLP and just be extra gentle...but it is important |
| drburkhart | Wec, it can be. That is why you should report all of this to the person who is treating you. |
| drrhodus | joy---great...good advice ! |
| wec | yes I will, of course. |
| mainebob | my olp started shortly after dental work and cleaning and i think i was also overdoing listerine... |
| pn | carol i have used dilaudid for pain mnagement and valium at night it was a god send |
| Ally3 | mine started after using a stong whitening toothpaste |
| drrhodus | mainebob...common problem..once under control just avoid those things that irritate |
| joy | My lichen planus started when I took cipro for an infection on my elbow. Could cipro cause it or was it more likely because of the primary infection? |
| carol | my dentist says olp happens alot after menopause. Any relationship? |
| drburkhart | mainebob, we tell all mucosal disease patients to stay away from alcohol containing mouthrinses |
| Carol | Can the dentist prescribe for pain management or is this something that should be done by my doctor? |
| mainebob | ok |
| mainebob | i will |
| drrhodus | Carol....very likely |
| margit | I found i could hardly clean my theeth. So cleaning by dentist is very important |
| susan | have u heard of accutane for LP treatment? |

| Carol | Also have other autoimmune conditions - hypo-thyroid, |
| drrees | carol, we have studied that and have not been able to find a relationship. It does occur more often in women who are past menopause but the hormonal changes may not have a direct association. We don't know what causes OLP much of the time unless it is an allergic reaction. |
| drrhodus | Susan ...yes accutane can be used...but has variable results and should be closely monitored |
| ............................ mari joined............. | |
| Ally3 | also post menopause, would hormone replacement help |
| pn | dr.b why don't drs like to talk about pain management |

| drrees | Judah, thank you for your comment. |
| Carol | Is there a newsletter from you that is available for mailing or email? |
| susan | my dentist gave me Prevident toothpaste (fruit flavor) and it really helps |
| drrhodus | Pain management is indeed very important, but it is best to try to deal with the cause of the pain and treat the pathology |
| Morten | drrhodus: THNX |
| mainebob | should most dentist recognize olp when they see it ? |
| Amy | I was givenTriam. 1%Oint in Orabase to put on my sore it goes everywhere and burns is this commonly prescribed? |

| joy | Avoid the use of mint and cinnamon flavored items. They really irritate my OLP |
| Carol | My mother used Prevident when she battled oral cancer - I don't reallyw ant that one! |
| drrees | joy, it is possible for some drugs to cause a lichenoid reaction. Cipro isn't known to but in your case it sounds as thought that was just when the OLP began. It is most unlikely that cipro or infection will lead to prolonged OLP. |
| pn | yes i know that but if the dr knows how to perscribe they ween you off as my cond has im proved my dr has reduced the amount look into it maybe texas does not allow drs, to be sympathetic |
