The Screening Appointment ...
Why do I need a screening appointment?
The
screening examination provides a general assessment of your dental
health. We must review the information gathered through the screening
appointment to determine whether or not your case can be managed
through our student clinics. Some patients will be informed at the
screening appointment the BCD will be unable to meet their needs. Other
patients will be notified within six weeks if they have been assigned
to a student. Where do I come for my appointment?
BCD
is located at 3302 Gaston Avenue at Hall Street, about a mile east of
downtown Dallas, adjacent to Baylor University Medical Center. Detailed
maps are available
on the College Web, or you may call 214-828-8464 for recorded
directions. There are several pay parking lots located near the
college. You also may park on the street at a meter. Enter
the main entrance on Gaston Avenue unless you require the special ramp
accommodations on Hall Street. From inside the main entrance, go to the
left past the elevators to the orange "Information/Oral Diagnosis"
window and inform the staff of your arrival. If
you enter the basement via the Hall Street ramp, turn left at the first
main corridor. Continue until you reach the large snack area. Turn
right to reach the elevators to the first floor. Upon exiting, turn
left and you will see the orange "Information/Oral Diagnosis" window.
Inform the staff there of your arrival. If you need a wheelchair or
other assistance entering the building, please call the Security Office
at 214-828-8335 in advance of your appointment. What does the examination cost? The cost for the dental screening examination is $16, payable at the time of service by cash, check, Mastercard or VISA. This fee is non-refundable.
Who will examine me? You
will be examined by dental students and dentists who are members of the
dental faculty. BCD is a teaching facility, and students provide the
care under the careful supervision of faculty members.
What can I expect at this examination? Your head, neck, face and mouth will be examined along with your teeth and gums. You
should be prepared to stay for at least 1
1/2 hours. Please bring with you allergy information and any
medications you are taking to help us compile your complete medical
history. If you are unable to keep your appointment, please call
214-828-8441 to cancel at least 24 hours prior to you scheduled time.
What will I be told about my mouth? You will be informed about the condition of your gums and teeth. The students or faculty
will provide an estimate of the treatment needed and its approximate cost. When will my treatment begin? In most cases, treatment will begin at a future appointment after you are assigned to a dental student. What if I have a dental emergency after the
screening appointment but before the assignment? If you have an emergency which requires immediate attention during the time
you are waiting to be assigned, please seek the care of a private dentist. Can children receive dental care? Children
ages 4 through 15 receive care through the Department of Pediatric
Dentistry. Call 214-8288-8133 for screening information. For children
under age 4, call 214-828-8166.
Are braces available at the dental school? Call the Department of Orthodontics at 214-828-8123
for information regarding orthodontic care. How do I become a patient at BCD?
Thank you
for your interest in becoming a general care patient at Baylor College
of Dentistry. Patients should call 214-828-8441 for an appointment.
In order to be considered as a patient you will require a preliminary
screening to determine if you are a teaching case patient for our
dental students. Acceptance as a patient does not guarantee that you
will be assigned to a dental student. Assignment to a dental student is
based on the student needs. Since we are a teaching institution we only
accept a limited number of patients. If you are accepted or referred to
one of our specialty clinics a $16 fee will be charged. Referral to our
specialty clinics does not guarantee that you will be accepted as one
of their patients. The clinic will provide their own screening and
notify you of their decision. The $16 fee is not refunded if you are
not assigned. If you are not accepted as a patient no fee will be
charged for the exam. You should have/bring names of medications you
are currently taking with you as you will be asked to answer some
medical history questions. Here are some important things that
you should consider if you are interested in becoming a patient.
- Fees are not based on income and are due at the time of service.
- All treatment fees are approximately 30-40% less than a private dentist.
- Medicaid and Medicare are not accepted for general dental treatment.
- Insurance is not accepted as a form of payment.
- There are no payment plan options available.
- Patients must be able to come in for appointments an average of once a week.
- Parking is available in the surrounding area for a minimal fee.
- A fee is charged for all services performed at the dental college.
- Accepted forms of payment are cash, check, money order, visa or master card.
- Patients will only be accepted if they agree to comprehensive treatment.
- Comprehensive treatment means that we will provide all dental treatment needed and not single procedure treatment.
