MISSION

The mission of Baylor College of Dentistry is to improve the oral health of Texans and shape the future of dentistry by:

GOALS & OBJECTIVES
2001-2005

1. Education Goal

Baylor College of Dentistry is committed to providing educational programs that foster professionalism, critical thinking and life-long learning.

Undergraduate Dental Hygiene & Predoctoral Dental Objectives

1.1. Review the undergraduate dental hygiene & predoctoral dental curricula to enhance the learning sequence, eliminate redundancy, and convert to a semester-based system.

1.2. Develop/improve the undergraduate dental hygiene & predoctoral dental competency-based evaluation systems and their associated competency documents.

Advanced Education Objectives

1.3. Enhance the quality of advanced clinical training available in the dental specialties for clinical residents.

1.4. Develop/improve the curriculum in the biomedical sciences for students in advanced clinical training programs and clinician scientists.

1.5. Enhance and facilitate the combined clinical-biomedical graduate program for outstanding predoctoral students and clinician scientists who wish to pursue academic careers in the oral health sciences.

Continuing Education Objective

1.6. Offer a broad spectrum of continuing education options that are accessible to all dental professions.

2. Patient Care Goal

Baylor College of Dentistry is committed to providing quality care in an environment that is sensitive to the needs of every patient.

Patient Care Objectives

2.1. Provide patient-centered, comprehensive care in a continuous, clinical curriculum.

2.2. Optimize clinical efficiency and effectiveness for patients, students, staff, and faculty.

3. Research Goal

Baylor College of Dentistry is committed to expanding the scientific knowledge base underlying the etiology, progression, prevention and treatment of dental and craniofacial disorders.

Research Objectives

3.1. Support outstanding basic, clinical and translational research, both at Baylor College of Dentistry and in collaboration with other HSC components and affiliated institutions.

3.2. Expand and maintain opportunities for research training of predoctoral and postdoctoral students as well as research experiences for clinical faculty.

4. Outreach Goal

Baylor College of Dentistry is committed to collaborating with HSC components and community partners to conduct outreach programs for the benefit of our citizens.

Outreach Objectives

4.1. Increase opportunities for student participation in community-based training programs for clinical care and health education/promotion and disease prevention.

4.2. Increase opportunities for health professional participation in community-based training programs for health education/promotion and disease prevention at the local and state levels.

4.3. Develop a system to initiate, facilitate and document outreach activities throughout the College.

5. Faculty, Staff, Students and Alumni Goal

Baylor College of Dentistry is committed to recruiting, retaining, and developing the highest quality faculty, staff and students in an environment that values life-long collegial relationships.

Faculty Objectives

5.1. Recruit and retain a diverse faculty by providing them with the resources and support to achieve professional success and/or career satisfaction.

5.2. Develop faculty skills in contemporary teaching methodologies, research techniques and newer clinical technologies.

Staff Objective

5.3. Recruit and retain a diverse staff by providing them with the resources and support to achieve professional success and/or career satisfaction.

Student Objectives

5.4. Expand dental career counseling and recruitment activities.

5.5. Increase the enrollment of students from disadvantaged backgrounds or underserved areas (DBUA) through enrichment and career development programs, state initiatives and affiliation agreements with targeted campuses.

5.6. Improve retention and develop students as life-long colleagues through College programs and activities.

Alumni Objectives

5.7. Increase the involvement of alumni in the activities and initiatives of the College.

5.8. Develop a structured fund raising program for endowed scholarships, chairs and infrastructure needs with alumni groups and other constituents.

College Recognition Objective

5.9. Expand the promotion of faculty, staff, students and alumni accomplishments through print, broadcast and Web media.

6. Infrastructure Goal

Baylor College of Dentistry is committed to improving the financial, physical and information technology resources that support the goals of the College.

Infrastructure Objectives

6.1. Upgrade and renovate the clinical environment to provide contemporary patient care, including treatment areas, clinical computing capabilities and instrument management.

6.2. Upgrade and renovate the teaching environment to promote small-group learning and patient simulation for preclinical training.

6.3. Upgrade and renovate the research environment to facilitate basic and clinical research.

6.4. Upgrade and renovate the information technology environment to promote the development and use of online educational tools and services.
