Tongue Spots

My daughter is 3 and her pediatrician told me that she had "Geographic Tongue." She said, "that it is nothing to be really worried about."  She also said, "that it is hereditary."  Is that true and should I be worried about it or not?

'Geographic Tongue' is, indeed, nothing to worry about. The 10 dollar name for the condition is 'benign migratory glossitis'  -- the key word, of course, being 'benign' which, in this case, means not to worry. Migratory means it happens at random places on the tongue, thus the common name 'geographic.' What happens is that the filiform papillae (little tongue hairs which make portions of the tongue appear white) slough off in some individuals, leaving the splotchy looking spots. In short, your pediatrician is right on the money. Keep taking her advice, and your little one will be, as we say in Texas, in `tall cotton.'
