I am 28 years old and am seriously worried that I will have to have dentures because I cannot afford to go to a dentist.  My gums are turning black and they bleed and several of my teeth are breaking apart.  Do you know of any advice on how I can get help.  Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!  THANX!

There are several things that need to be considered here.  How long has it been since you've had a physical exam?  Certain systemic problems, such as vitamin deficiency, blood problems, immune system problems can contribute to gum disease.

On the other hand, smoking, lack of proper oral hygiene and sometimes heredity may play significant roles in both gum disease and tooth decay.  Large amounts of tartar above and below the gumline can contribute to seemingly major problems which may or may not improve after a complete exam and regular cleaning.  Diet plays an important role in tooth decay.

You should seek care for a complete exam and diagnosis which would lead to the treatment plan that best fits your desires and budget.  I would suggest going to the dental school that is closest to you and seeking an appointment for an evaluation.  This would not cost much, but would lead to a definitive description of the problems and how to treat them.  Thanks for your inquiry.
